The Fabric of Chicago
The MCA has transformed itself from a quiet, undiscovered treasure to a part of the city's fabric.
I think the most dramatic thing that's happened is that Chicago knows who the MCA is, and Chicago engages with the MCA. In the beginning, this was a very quiet, undiscovered little treasure. I mean they mounted extraordinary exhibitions. They featured incredible artists for their first shows. It wasn't that they didn't do beautiful work, but nobody knew that they existed. I mean, it was like my first discovery—this quiet, silent building with nobody in it. Now, the MCA is part of the fabric of this city. It's a member of the Museums in the Park. It's one of the big 11. It's not this little tiny, sleepy place that nobody's ever heard of. So that's the most dramatic change from my perspective.
