Chicago Art Goes International
A trip to Documenta in 1982 shows Chicago collectors and museum-goers a bit more of the international art world.
Donald Young and I did a show of Georg Baselitz in 1982, and people were just shocked by the prices because they hadn't heard of him. But in 1982 the museums decided to go to Documenta where they saw early [Anselm] Kiefers and Baselitz and [Jiří] Dokoupil and [Markus] Lüpertz, and all the Germans, and [Sigmar] Polke and [Gerhard] Richter and all the people that they really had not known about. And I think that was probably the year that I think that I would say that Chicago collectors and museum-goers became international.
