In the summer of 2009, my girlfriend at the time had invited me to visit Chicago with her–we were living in Boston but she grew up on the northwest side–we had been dating a few months and it was a big step in our relationship. The trip was memorable for a number of reasons but I vividly remember my first visit to the MCA. We walked through Olafur Eliasson’s exhibition, awash in color and mesmerized by the installations, something so common and organic about the work but somehow romantic in its simplicity. The name of the exhibition was “Take Your Time,” and I did–it took me 6 years later to propose to her. That exhibition and the MCA will always stay in my heart because its one of the places I first fell in love with my wife.
