Kerry James Marshall recalls the opportunity that his first solo exhibition at the MCA afforded him.

So I’ve had two exhibitions at the MCA—two solo exhibitions at the MCA. And each one of those exhibitions I think also say something about what the importance of a museum like the Museum of Contemporary Art. The first one, which I think is really pivotal and kind of critical, is the way in which a museum like the Museum of Contemporary Art gives an artist an opportunity to simply explore possibilities as opposed to fulfilling already refined and—determined projects.
