Going Against the Postmodern Grain
Initial reactions by critics to the Kleihues building were mixed.
It turned out wonderfully well, except for some conversations from art critics and others in the city. It was not as well received as we would've liked. This was a moment in time when design – when Frank Gehry was designing buildings and people were doing all kinds of things. Postmodernism was strong. But I was determined not to let the spaceship land in the park.
Because I knew also that they mayor would hate it. So this was a wonderful thing that we chose something that was sympathetic to the surroundings. It's interesting enough, now with the benefit of hindsight, that is a very well regarded building nowadays, and people love it and people write about it.
