Christo and Jan van der Marck

1960s Artists Building Christo Founders Jan van der Marck

Christo became friends with the first director of the MCA, Jan van der Marck, just prior to the museum's founding.

We became friendly already in the '64, '65, with a young curator in Minneapolis, Jan Van Der Marck. Jan Van Der Mark was the curator of Minneapolis Walker Art Center. And he was preparing exhibition called Ambiguous Image. And he borrowed the Four Store Fronts Corner sculpture from Leo Castelli, 1966, and also Package on Wheelbarrow from MoMA, some other works. But he was already – leaving the Walker Art Center. He was invited to become founding director of Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. And he move here. And he was the first to refurbish that Playboy building on Ontario Street. And he was by having here that the things in the MoMA was not working, in December of '68
