Our Civic Responsibility

2010s Board Chicago

Anne Kaplan shares her thoughts on a contemporary art museum's purpose.

I think, for myself and a lot of my fellow trustees, this is a really unique, in every sense of the word, time in our country, and I think we all cherish our position on this board, and take on our responsibilities even more seriously, to become an open forum in a place where we feel free and safe at the same time.

Where issues are abounding all around us, because it is contemporary art, and every contemporary artist has everything political to say today. And I think we honor that, and feel a responsibility to keep democracy in our sights, and to understand how important a museum of contemporary art is, really. Before it was theoretical, and now it’s real. I like this time for that reason, and that reason only.
